DISCUSSION
Staff is seeking approval of a public art mural installation along the R Street and Fahrens Park multiuse path undercrossing.
The Arts and Culture Advisory Commission suggests issuing a Call for Art Projects for an interactive mural project to enhance the undercrossing beneath R Street and Fahrens Park.
This mural will transform the frequently used pedestrian and bicycle path into a vibrant community space. The design should depict a lively scene, with interactive elements such as augmented reality or tactile features to engage the public. The goal is to foster a sense of pride and ownership within the community by celebrating local culture while making the space more welcoming and enjoyable for all.
The dimensions will span one side of the undercrossing from the entrance to the from Fahrens Park to the end of the tunnel on the north wall - approximately 86 linear feet by 10 feet high. Upon the City Council’s approval, the City will issue a call for artists.
IMPACT ON CITY RESOURCES
As part of the 2023/24 Budget, the City Council allocated $100,000 for art installation and events across Merced. Since none of the funding was used the budget allocation carried forward into FY 2024/25.
A total of $20,000 in funding is available within the Fiscal Year 2024-25 General Fund budget.
