DISCUSSION

Merced Fire Department has a rich community history and to said point, has been organized for the last 150 years. Merced Fire Department administration took the opportunity to reflect on the service to the community and also engage the community for the next 150 years by creating a Strategic Plan. MFD’s last Strategic Plan was created in 2011. As a council goal the creation and adoption of a 5-year Strategic Plan was identified.

MFD solicitated the interest and engagement of the community to form the 2023 Strategic Plan Committee. The committed consists of community leaders from the fire department, business community, real estate community, health care community, insurance community, education community, and community organizations.

The initial kickoff meeting fell in line with the formation of the Merced Fire Department exactly 150 years earlier, to the exact date, April 14th, 2023. The group met at city hall just as their counterparts did 150 years prior. The topics were very similar, discuss what we can do better to protect our community. 5 meetings were held, one at each fire station, and 5 separate topics were discussed. The topics were EMS Service Delivery, Fire Prevention, Fire Department Deployment, Budget, and Community Relations.

The meetings were very well attended, and participation was high. The committee provided feedback for the group. The committee had many questions with regard to EMS service. As a whole, the committee’s participation has made the plan robust.

It is the honor of the Strategic Plan Committee to present the 2023 Merced Fire Department Strategic Plan for adoption.

IMPACT ON CITY RESOURCES

No impact on city resources. Any incidental costs will be absorbed under the current year operational budget. Future planning to be developed from Strategic Planning Committee findings.
