CITY COUNCIL PRIORITIES

As provided for in the 2024-25 Adopted Budget.

DISCUSSION

The City of Merced Public Works Department utilizes traffic signal detection systems to allow for the safe crossing of pedestrians and vehicles at signalized intersections.  The proposed camera system utilizes two different technologies, video imaging and radar.  The Public Works Department is currently utilizing this Iteris system at the Mercy & G Street, G Street & Main Street, and G Street & El Portal Drive traffic signals with favorable results.  The purchase of the three complete signal detection systems will improve traffic signals at the intersections of Childs Avenue & Coffee Street and 15th Street & R Street, as well as providing one spare system.

Equipment will be purchased directly from the manufacturer, Iteris, Inc., who has quoted the three systems at $73,651.14, plus freight. The Public Works Department is requesting Council waive competitive bidding requirements to allow for the purchase and standardization of traffic signal camera detection system parts up to $75,000 to include freight.
