Title

SUBJECT: Mayor Serratto’s Request to Discuss a Downtown Arch

REPORT IN BRIEF

Mayor Serratto’s Request to discuss a Downtown Arch.

RECOMMENDATION

Provide direction to assign this project to a City Council Sub-Committee

Body

DISCUSSION

On August 7, 2023, Mayor Serratto requested to add a future Business Item to discuss getting a Downtown Arch. The item is returning as directed by the Council.

Background

The City Council previously gave direction to explore the construction of a downtown arch in the planned Bob Hart Square extension on Canal Street, just north of 16th Street.  The project still requires design and funding to allow for construction.

Additional work needs to be completed to move this project forward.  It is recommended that this work be assigned to a Council Sub-Committee to engage with the community, consult with the Arts & Culture Advisory Commission, local FFA chapters, and the Historical Society to gather input, develop potential designs, evaluate existing resources, explore opportunities for additional private contributions and fundraising, and ultimately returning to the City Council with options for their consideration.

IMPACT ON CITY RESOURCES

None at this time.
