DISCUSSION
Commissioner Cardona requested this item to discuss the feasibility of utilizing the Merced Senior Center, located at 755 W. 15th Street, as a youth center for teens after 3pm when all senior programming is concluded. Senior programming normally runs Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm, but is currently suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last regular senior center program calendar from March 2020 is attached for your information.
Additionally, the facility is normally rented to the public in the hours senior programming is not offered, but is also currently suspended due to the pandemic. This facility is very popular for rentals, as it is the nicest and largest one the City has. Typical rental schedule includes: a regular church group that meets Sundays from 10 AM to Noon, and Wednesday nights from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM; social dance on the fourth Sunday of the month from 1 PM to 5 PM; Zumba on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Additionally, the facility is occasionally requested for late afternoon or early evening meetings on weekdays beginning around 4:30 PM to 6 PM several nights a month. Most weekends and Friday nights the facility is rented and would not be available for alternate programming.
