body

AUTHORITY

Charter of the City of Merced, Section 200.

CITY COUNCIL PRIORITIES

City Council goals and priorities, Public Safety FY 2022-2023.

DISCUSSION

Over the past year, the City Council have sought out alternative public safety strategies aimed at reducing and preventing violence within the City of Merced.  The presentation on Advance Peace is a recommended alternative for City Council consideration.  Staff is seeking direction on next steps to evaluate Advance Peace as a possible program for implementation locally.

In addition to this program, Council Member Ornelas has suggested that a study be conducted that evaluates the financial impact community violence has on local systems of care.  As the proposed analysis would include agencies outside of the City of Merced’s scope, it is recommended that consultant services be sought out and secured to perform an independent evaluation.  The potential cost of the study is currently unknown.

IMPACT ON CITY RESOURCES

$250,000 in Measure Y funds was allocated in FY 2021-22.  An additional $250,000 was allocated through the American Rescue Plan Act, bringing the total amount of $500,000 designated to a violence prevention program.  Should the City Council decide to embark on an independent study, additional funding would be needed.
