DISCUSSION
The Parks and Community Services Department was contacted by Mr. Tony Slaton about renaming Flanagan Park after the Slaton Family that has a rich history in Merced, and specifically in the area near the park. Research revealed that a covenant on the land where the park is located requires that it always bear the name of the family that donated it: Flanagan.
Mr. Slaton was informed of the restrictions, so the Slaton’s revised their park naming application to request that the shelter at Flanagan Park be named after the Slaton Family. Staff has reviewed the application and determined that it meets all criteria of the City’s Parks and Facilities Naming Policy.
The Commission is being asked to consider the park naming request and make a recommendation to the City Council.
