DISCUSSION

Three years ago the City Council decided there was a need for more afterschool programming for the youth in Merced. The City went through the Request for Proposal process and originally selected five proposers to offer programs at the McNamara Park Community Center five days a week. One proposer declined to sign a contract.

The four operators provided services to youth in the neighborhood four days a week between 3 and 6 p.m. After approximately a year, two of the operators decided to offer their programs elsewhere.

The two afterschool service providers who remained at McNamara Park Community Center were: Symple Equazion/Kelly Turner and MOJO/Rachelle Abril.

Under the Scope of Services, this renewal contract with Symple Equazion will provide programs every other Monday, every other Tuesday, and every Friday, approximately 8 days a month.

The other provider, MOJO/Rachelle Abril, provided services every other Monday, every Wednesday and every Thursday. That contract was suspended due to lack of insurance coverage. The MOJO contract also expires this month.

Staff proposes renewing the contract with Symple Equazion for seven months through June 30, 2018. Staff will return to the City Council on December 4, 2017, seeking direction for future use of the McNamara Center in light of the reduced services offered to the youth.

IMPACT ON CITY RESOURCES

No appropriation of funds is needed.
