DISCUSSION
Over the past few years, the PG&E Corporation has approached the City of Merced seeking opportunities to invest in arts locally. Last year, a $3,000 funding opportunity became available. With the understanding that the City Council was working to establish an Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission, staff made a request of PG&E to allow the funds to be carried over to this fiscal year. The grant does not require a City match.
This grant will be provided to the City’s newly established Arts and Culture Advisory Committee as a project opportunity. The Commission will provide a recommendation to the City Council on the use of the funds for a specific project. Staff will continue to seek additional funding opportunities, in partnership with the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission, to enhance this program within the City.
This item is being returned to the City’s Arts and Culture Advisory Commission to allow for the conversation to continue on the best project to support in the appropriation of funding.
At the March 14, 2019 Arts and Culture Advisory Commission meeting, Commissioners discussed using the grant funds to maintain art at the G Street Underpass and the lettering at Bob Hart Square. Commissioners directed staff to bring back a cost estimate for both projects.
