DISCUSSION

At the Citizens Advisory Charter Review Committee meeting of June 18, 2019, the initial discussion on Charter Section 400 was led by Mayor Murphy, who stated reasons the City Council suggested that this section be reviewed.  The committee requested staff provide the term length of Mayors from other cities in the valley to assist with the discussion and the recommendation that will be provided to the Council.

The terms of some local jurisdictions are as follow:

Turlock                     4 year term

Ceres                                          4 year term

Madera                     4 year term

Los Banos                     2 year term

Chowchilla                     1 year rotating term

In regards to number of terms, the most commonly found is a limit of two terms, which is the current number of terms for both the Mayor and City Council for the City of Merced.
