REPORT IN BRIEF

Considers accepting and appropriating a donation of ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00) from Harvest Church to offset the costs of purchasing a Police Dog. 

 

RECOMMENDATION

City Council - Adopt a motion:

 

A.  Accepting the donation of ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00) from Harvest Church for use in the Merced Police K9 Unit; and,

 

B.  Increasing Contributions and Donations revenue account #001-1001-360-02-01 in the amount of $10,000 and appropriating the same amount to account #001-1001-523-43-00 to offset the costs of purchasing a police dog for the Merced Police K9 Unit; and,

 

C. Authorizing the City Manager or the Assistant City Manager to execute the donation acceptance agreement.

DISCUSSION

The Merced Police Department has received a donation from Harvest Church, located at 225 4th St in the City of Turlock. Senior Pastor Ron Eivaz presented the check to the Merced Police Department as a donation for the purchase of a police dog for the Merced Police K9 Unit. Senior Pastor Ron Eivaz advised that the Harvest Church has made donations to police agencies in the area to support law enforcement.  Police Officer Arias of the Merced Police DART unit is a member of the Harvest Church.  The Merced Police Department is requesting to use the funds to offset the costs of purchasing a police dog, equipment and supplies for the Merced Police K9 Unit.

 

The total cost of bringing on an additional K-9 to the Department is approximately $32,500.  The acceptance of this donation will be added to a donation from the Merced Police Officers Association in the amount of $8,166.62 to bring the total donated amount to $18,166.62.  In order meet the additional need, the department will evaluate additional budget areas and make recommendations to the City Council in January of 2021.

 

IMPACT ON CITY RESOURCES

Accepting the $10,000 to Contributions and Donations account 001-1001-360-02-01 and supplemental appropriation of the same amount to account 001-1001-523-43-00 for purchasing Police K9 dog, equipment and supplies.
